The Varsity Wrestling team took home their 7th straight victory last night with a 40-21 win over the Noblesville Millers. The Royals were led by Juniors Andrew Irick, Jake Simone, and Ronan Hiner, and Senior Luke Ferren who all recorded falls.
Other winners included Freshman Gaige Lloyd in a drama filled 126 pound scrap where he nearly ran out of blood time and eeked out a 1 point victory. Junior Reece Luhmann was dominant at 145, winning by major decision before his classmate Jackson Williams won a 1 point match at 152. Freshman Ryan Cast gutted out a close win for HSE with a decision at 170. Finally, Senior HWT, Crae Kunkleman won a dominant 5-0 decision.
The match of the night may have been one the Royals lost at 120 pounds. Sophomore Jake Lemieux was in on the legs all night, but was stymied by his opponents defense for much of the match. With the score tied and 15 seconds remaining, Lemieux was on the attack, scoring an apparent match sealing takedown with 3 seconds left to gain control. It wasn’t to be as the official said control wasn’t gathered and the match went to Overtime.
In OT, Lemieux had to defend a shot and got into a scramble where a close and hotly contested takedown was awarded to his opponent. Both wrestlers were exhausted, they will see each other again at the North Montgomery Holiday tourney in 2 weeks for a rematch.
The Royals, now ranked #18 in the Indianamat Poll, will wrestle again Saturday at the Kyle Osborn Memorial Duals in Lafayette.
