The JV Royals football team traveled to Avon High School early Saturday morning to face the Orioles. The first quarter was a slow start for both teams; they each had some solid drives but were unable to find the end zone. The scoreboard got going in the second quarter when Avon’s wide receivers were able to sneak past the Royals secondary a couple of times. Offensively, the Royals battled poor field position and were unable to flip the field, leaving Avon with short offensive drives. They seized their short-field opportunities one final time to close out the first half, making the score 18-0.
The momentum swung the Royals’ way early in the third quarter when linebacker Larry Jones forced a strip sack and Jackson Constantine scooped up the loose ball to run it in for six points. With a made extra point attempt by Joseph Osiecki, the Royals cut the lead to 18-7.
But Avon responded immediately with an 80-yard drive and increased the lead again, 25-7.
The Royals turned to their ground game on the next possession. The running back duo of Jace Alexander and Dagan Fowley helped the offensive unit drive the length of the field. To cap off the impressive drive, Fowley plunged his way into the end zone on a fourth and goal attempt. A successful two-point conversion attempt cut the lead to ten with the fourth quarter ticking away.
After forcing the Orioles to punt, the Royals offense had another opportunity to cut the lead. Quarterback Sam Jacobs led an impressive up-tempo aerial attack with time winding down. With good throws and some crucial scramble plays, he guided the offense into the Orioles’ goal line. But on fourth down, Jacobs scrambled out of the pocket to run and came up just a yard short of the end zone. Avon then proceeded to run the time out to end the game.
