The young Royals competed well at the Duals on Day 1 of the North Mont Holiday Duals. The day began with pool play which saw the Royals take on 2A State Qualifiers West Vigo in Round 1. The Royals were able to pull away by the end and win 45-23 despite having to forfeit all day at 182 pounds due to being medically ruled out at weigh ins.
Round 2 wasn’t close as a team, but saw 220 pounder Andrew Irick, previously ranked #13 in the state, take out the #1 wrestler in the state (and #17 nationally) in an 8-2 decision before the team went on to win 60-18. Unfortunately, during a first period flurry of action, Junior Ronan Hiner, ranked number 7 in the Semi-State Rankings, injured his shoulder. He would continue that match and win one handed in overtime against a quality opponent, but his tournament ended that match, costing the Royals another weight class the rest of the day.
In round 3, the Royals took care of business to win their pool over New Haven, 43-29 to advance to the Championship bracket.
Ultimately, the 12 points the Royals spotted both Pendleton Heights and Mount Vernon in the Semi-final and 3rd place match, respectively, cost them close matches that likely would have flipped to victories had the full roster been healthy. As it was, the young team fought hard and came up just short and finished 4th place in the 16 team tourney.
