The Young Royals had a fantastic second day on the mats at the North Montgomery Holiday Classic. This unique tourney includes a day of duals and the second day is an individual tournament. The Royals had a lot of success crowning 2 champs and 2 runner-ups to bring home 2nd place overall in a tough 16-team tourney.
The Royals were led by 113 Pounder Jake Simone and 220 Pounder Andrew Irick, who won their respective weights, knocking off state ranked opponents along the way. Simone beat #11 Ranked Preston Teusch from Huntington North in the Semi-Final 4-1 before avenging one of his 2 losses on the season to Carleton Perry of Warren Central 3-2 in the final to win his championship.
Irick, fresh off his upset of the #1 ranked 220 pounder in the state in Elwood’s Kyle Cornwell on Day 1, beat Semi-State Ranked #7 Cade Campbell of Pendleton before squaring off with Cornwell again in the semi-final, only to win the rematch 6-3 to advance to face #14 ranked and host Drew Webster in the final. Irick won handily 6-3 and took home the most outstanding wrestler trophy for the tournament as well.
Senior Crae Kunkleman and Junior Reece Luhmann both had great days as well, finishing 2nd to tough wrestlers (ranked #1 and #4 respectively) in their finals.
Also placing for the Royals were Freshman Ryan Hartig at 106, filling in for an injured Sam Crousore, taking home 6th place in a tough tourney. Sophomore Jake Lemieux lost 2 tight ones before winning his 5th place bout at 120. Freshman Gaige Lloyd, despite an injury, was able to take 6th place at 126. Senior Ethan Pritt battled tough to take home 6th as well at 132. Junior Jackson Williams placed 4th in a loaded 152 pound class as well to round out the placers for HSE.
