The HSE Royals Freshmen Football Team traveled south to meet up with the Flashes of Franklin Central High School to begin the first conference game between the two schools, as the Flashes joined the HCC this school year. The Flashes would get on the scoreboard first to take the lead 6 – 0, the Royals would prevent the two point conversion from scoring with Spencer Lotz and Jack Greer teaming up to make the stop. On the drive, Louden Sundling would make a tackle for loss and Dylan Conner would have a pass deflection for the defense. The offense would respond with a drive of their own as Cam Howard would find Jack Wafford in the air on the first offensive play for a first down and later on in the drive for a short gain. Blaine Wertz would take care of the rest of the work on the ground and finish the drive with the touchdown. The extra point would be blocked and keep the score knotted up at 6 – 6. As the Flashes were putting together a threatening drive inside the red zone of the Royals, Matt Retzner would come from his cornerback position to pop the ball loose from the running back and Dylan Conner would be the “Johnny on the Spot” for the fumble recovery.

The second quarter would start with the Royals being forced to punt the ball back to the Flashes. The defense would force a turnover on downs with Noah Wolf deflecting a deep pass on the drive. Alex Geroulis would help the offense out after a stalled drive to pin the ball inside the 10 yard line with a great punt. The Flashes would later score on their drive with a good run play and kept the momentum going as they converted the two point conversion to push the score in their favor, 14 – 6. The Royals would turn the ball over and the Flashes would take advantage. The home team would score another touchdown and two point conversion to increase their lead to 22 – 6. Sundling would make a tackle for loss on the drive despite the score.

In the 3rd quarter, the Royals would force a punt with Max Broom making a big tackle for loss to help halt the Flashes. Wertz would get the offense going as he would bowling ball through defenders to move the chains. Howard would find Jaden Smith and Wertz both for short gains in the air. Wertz would punch the ball in on 4th and short on the Flashes goal line and then would make good on the two point conversion on the ground as well. The Royals would trim the lead to 22 – 14 going into the 4th quarter.

The defense would force the Flashes to punt with Sundling coming up with a tackle for loss and Conner deflecting a pass on a big third down stop. The Royals would have to convert a 4th and short to continue their drive with Wertz squeezing through to make the yard line to gain and move the chains. Howard connected with Wafford on a short pass for another first down. On 4th and goal, the Royals would come up short on a very controversial call on the goal line as to whether the ball carrier crossed the plane or not. The unfortunate call would fall in the favor of the Flashes and the game would subsequently end 22 – 14. The Royals will host Brownsburg in their final game of the season on Saturday, October 13th at 10am.
