The 2018 HSE Royals Freshman Football Team traveled down to 56th Street to take on the Bears of Lawrence Central of the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference in Central Indiana. After a promising first drive, the Royals were forced to punt to the Bears but were able to get the ball back on an interception near the goal line by Dylan Conner. After costly penalties by both teams on their respective drives, the Royals were able to capitalize off a fumble recovery by Louden Sundling with the 1st quarter ending and the score remaining tied, 0 – 0.

Alex Hobson would find Jaden Smith in the air on a big 2nd and long play to get things going offensively, along with some good hard running by Blaine Wertz. The drive would end with Charlie Irish following his offensive linemen into the end zone to finally light the scoreboard up. Mitchell Rittman, Hobson, and Alex Geroulis would put the snap, hold, and kick together for the extra point to put the Royals up 7 – 0. On the next drive, Wyatt Molander and Will Gerig would work together to get a sack on the very elusive LC quarterback for a big loss. The defensive line group with Molander, Jack Greer, and Colin Boer along with OLB Bryce Gray came up with a Safety on a group sack of the quarterback in the end zone. The Royals would go up 9 – 0. Smith would convert a 4th and 5 to keep a drive going on the ground and Wertz would finish the drive with a goal line run for the TD. Rittman, Hobson, and Geroulis would take care of the extra point, along with the front line to push the score to 16 – 0 to end the first half.

The 2nd half would start with LC taking the kick return back for the score but the Royals would hold strong with Spencer Lotz intercepting the 2 point conversion to prevent any further damage with the score now 16 – 6. On the next drive, the Royals offense would pound it on the ground with long runs from Wertz and Hobson keeping it himself to finish the drive for the score. Rittman, Hobson, and Geroulis would take care of the extra point along with the front line to push the score to 23 – 6. After a good run by the LC running back for a TD, the Royals would hold strong on the 2 point conversion again and limit the damage, the score was now 23 – 12.

The Royals would put together a drive to answer the score by the home team and would put 3 more points on the board to start the 4th quarter with Rittman, Hobson, and Geroulis taking care of the short field goal along with the front line to push the score to 26 – 12. The defensive would come up big with a tackle for loss by Molander and a sack by Gray. They would continue to do their part to add to the visitor’s score by sacking the punter in the end zone for the safety led by a small party of Royals in on the play to extend the lead to 28 – 12. Good hustle from the backside of the secondary by Dagan Fowley would prevent a long run for a score. After a penalty, a few botched snaps, Matt Randolph would recover the ball on the Bears goal line to end any final threats to the scoreboard. The Royals would finish the game in Victory Formation and walk away with the win. On the day, Hobson would complete passes to Smith for 4 catches, Ian Bones and Stephen Sydnor would also haul in a catch each respectively.

The Royals host their Home Opener on the new turf field vs North Central out of the MIC Conference next Saturday, August 25th at 10am.
