Well… Just like that another season comes to a close. With a loss to a tough Noblesville team our girls basketball season ends and my favorite player, #5 has finished her high school athletic career at Hamilton Southeastern. My father-in-law always says after each season “onward and upward”, I suppose he is right. It might be time to focus on what is next, but I can’t help to reflect on all the positive experiences my own kids have had at HSE.
I have really enjoyed being a Dad/AD with my kids coming through Hamilton Southeastern. Hannah (24) was a soccer player, Eli (21) was a long snapper on the football team, and Lydia (17) was able to play soccer and basketball. Leah Ann and I are so thankful for the impact that HSE Coaches have had on our children. I think the lessons learned, the memories made, and the relationships formed will last a lifetime. There is nothing better than playing high school sports and getting to represent your school and community.
I remember what my friend, Fishers Athletic Director, Jim Brown told me when the Self kids were young and involved in lots of activities. We were gone every weekend with multiple events, games, or matches and Brownie told me… “Don’t wish this time away, enjoy it, it will be over before you know it.” He was right, it does go fast. I used to look at those busy weekends as a burden, now I think “what a blessing”, to get to see my kids play and compete in things they love doing. Truth is… I would do it all over again.
I would challenge families to cherish their time at HSE. It is easy to look forward to AAU, travel, club season or whatever is next, but being a high school athlete is a special time and it will be over before you know it. Our athletes, families, and coaches are what makes HSE special, make sure you take the time to enjoy the journey.
My mother-in-law has always said “Grow where you are planted”, I am so thankful that our family has grown up at Hamilton Southeastern. Thank you teachers, coaches, and administrators for helping the Self kids grow where they were planted.
