Last night the Hamilton Southeastern Board of Education passed a resolution to name the Varsity Baseball Field “Ken Seitz Field”.
Coach Seitz has been a part of Hamilton Southeastern High School since 1974, retiring from HSE in 2005. During his years at HSE, he was the athletic director for 25 years and the varsity baseball coach for 25 years. During that time, HSE baseball teams won 9 IHSAA Sectionals and 3 Regionals. Coach Seitz retired from baseball after the 2001 season and his final varsity coaching record was 514 wins and 193 losses (.727 winning %) – all during a one-class system in Indiana high school athletics. During his tenure as coach at HSE, Coach Seitz served as President of the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association on two different occasions. He was also the Chairman of the IHSBCA State Baseball Clinic for 15 years. In January of 2001, Coach Seitz was inducted into the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame.
In the spring of 2010, Seitz came out of baseball retirement to serve as a part-time varsity assistant coach at HSE. That has evolved into a full-time assistant position.
This baseball field was constructed early in Coach Seitz’ tenure and he has spent countless hours since grooming, caring for and maintaining the field. To this day, Coach Seitz spends time daily, year round, to make this field one of the best in Indiana high school baseball.
Coach Seitz is a graduate of Brown County High School. Seitz earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Indiana University. He is married to Kathy and has two children, Kory and Kristy. Royals Baseball has been a family affair for The Seitz family. Kathy has played a supporting role and attended most games for many, many years. Kristy has kept the scorebook in the dugout for 16 years, and Kory played for his father, earned all-state honors and is in his 14th year as an assistant coach at HSE. Coach Seitz gets great joy out of watching his three grandchildren Kameron, Haleigh, & Karson participate in sports and tonight you will see Kameron and Karson as bat boys for the Royals.
Here is a brief testimony from one of Coach Seitz former players. Todd Huston is a 1990 graduate and former HSE School Board member. Currently, he is a member of the Indiana House of Representatives, representing District 37.
“Playing for Coach Seitz not only impacted me during my high school career but throughout my life. He taught me the value of practice, hard work, preparation and confidence. Few people have taught me as many life lessons as Coach and for that I will be forever grateful.”
Athletic Director Jim Self said… “I have had the privilege to work alongside Coach Seitz for many years and when I think of Hamilton Southeastern Baseball I think of Coach Seitz and his family. Tonight is a special night; we get to honor someone who has put his heart and soul into HSE Baseball and HSE Athletics.
It is with a great deal of excitement that I look forward to watching Future Royals playing on Ken Seitz Field.”
